If you follow the robot vacuum space at all, you’ve probably heard of Dreame. It’s a somewhat new brand in the world of robot vacuums, and it has taken the world by storm. It also has a sub-brand called Mova, and also makes robot lawn mowers as well as a number of other electronics.
Now, Dreame has already been confirmed to be entering the electric vehicle market soon – not a surprise since Dreame is backed by Xiaomi which is also in the EV market. But Dreame is also planning to bring its own smartphone into the mix.
The company’s official Weibo account shared a teaser for its first smartphone this week. It will apparently be called “Dreame Space”. The teaser is quite vague and doesn’t really show off the device much at all, but we do get the idea that it’ll have advanced photography capabilities and will focus on astrophotography – hence the name.
Every brand wants a smartphone, but not every brand can be successful with a smartphone
Google has made it incredibly easy for brands to start up and launch a smartphone with an OS that is used by over 80% of the world. But selling those devices, supporting them, and continuing to make a profit is pretty tough in this space. There’s already a ton of players in the smartphone space, including one of Dreame’s investors, Xiaomi.
So how well could the Dreame Space do? Well that depends on a lot of things. The ‘Dreame’ brand as it is, is not that strong right now. At least in the US and even in Europe. Though I’d suspect the Space won’t be available in the US, and likely available in parts of Europe. I’d be surprised if it was available in more than just China and Asia.
Of course, smartphones is a big move for Dreame. It’s not like robot lawn mowers, window washers or pool cleaners, which are all kind of the same thing as a robot vacuum. They all share a lot of tech. But smartphones do not share a lot of tech with robot vacuums. So it’ll be interesting to see how Dreame does here.
