The Snapdragon Summit is ongoing, as the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 is expected to launch later today. As we’re waiting for that to happen, bombshell news arrived from Hawaii. Google and Qualcomm will bring Android to PCs… properly.
We’ve already seen Android on some PCs, mostly in China. Those were simply forks of Android for smartphones and/or tablets placed on PC hardware. We’re talking about something else entirely here.
Google and Qualcomm are working together to bring Android to PCs
Qualcomm CEO, Cristiano Amon, says that he’s seen a version of Android for PC, and that he “can’t wait to have one.” He revealed as much while speaking on stage, with Google’s head of platforms and devices, Rick Osterloh.
“In the past, we’ve always had very different systems between what we’re building on PCs and what we’re building on smartphones, and we’ve embarked on a project to combine that,” Osterloh said. He also added: “We [Google and Qualcomm] are building together a common technical foundation for our products on PCs and desktop computing systems.”
He also confirmed that Google plans to bring Gemini and the full Android AI stack to PCs. Osterloh promised “all applications and developer community”. Osterloh also said: “I think this is another way in which Android is gonna be able to serve everyone in every computing category.”
Cristiano Amon seemed quite excited about the project and said: “I’ve seen it, it is incredible.” He added that this “It delivers on the vision of convergence of mobile and PC.”
This follows Google’s announcement that Android & ChromeOS are merging
We kind of knew that Android was coming to PCs, as Google announced, back in July, that it’s combining ChromeOS and Android into a single platform. It remains to be seen when we’ll get the final result. The work is well underway, it would seem.
