Google rolled out the Material 3 Expressive redesign update for the Google TV app on Android devices recently. The search engine giant has now quietly started testing a newly redesigned user interface for the Google TV platform’s homescreen on smart televisions.
Google TV is getting a server-side update with a redesigned homescreen interface
Folks over at 9to5Google has spotted a new, redesigned Google TV homescreen interface. The update has appeared as a server-side firmware upgrade on top of Google TV Home v1.0.80697704. The source suggests that Google has slightly changed the top navigation bar on Google TV.
First up, the technology giant has removed the “Library” tab from the redesigned Google TV homescreen. It has now moved it under the profile image on the far left side of the screen. The updated profile button now shows a profile switcher and four options—Watchlist, Library, Your Services, and Content Preferences. Earlier, it only showed tabs like “Your services” and “Content preferences” in the Settings menu under Accounts & Profile.

The new redesigned Google TV homescreen now shows just the “Home,” “Live,” and “Apps” tabs in a huge pill-shaped box. On the right side of the box now sit the buttons for the screensaver and settings of your smart Google TV. Apart from the aforementioned changes, there aren’t many other feature updates in the redesigned homescreen interface for the Google TV platform.
Google seems to be testing the new homescreen interface at the moment
At the time of writing, not a lot of Google TV users have reported on the redesigned homescreen interface on the web. It appears that the tech titan is currently testing the new interface with a select number of users. The company could roll it out to the wider audience across the globe in the coming weeks.
For those unaware, the company introduced the Google TV platform back in 2020. In the past five years of its existence, Google hasn’t released a major overhaul of the streaming service. In 2024, the brand released a refreshed design that brought circular icons, but it wasn’t a major update. However, Google is bringing the Gemini AI chatbot features to the platform very soon.
