Google Tasks May Finally Add a Crucial ‘Deadlines’ Feature

Google‘s to-do list app, Google Tasks, has long been known for its simple and straightforward approach. While many users appreciate its minimalist design, the lack of more advanced features has often left it feeling a bit behind its competitors. However, a recent finding suggests that Google might be preparing to add a much-needed and long-requested feature: deadlines.

Currently, Google Tasks doesn’t allow you to set a due date at all, which is a significant limitation for anyone who needs to manage their time effectively. This potential change, while still in its early stages, would be a major step toward making the app a more practical tool for productivity. However, it seems that Google is experimenting with the ability to add a deadline to a task.

A look at how “deadlines” could change Google Tasks

The discovery comes from the Android Authority team. Exploring a recent Google Tasks release (v.2025.09.15.807005873.0-release). Based on the initial findings, the new deadline feature would work in a specific way. You wouldn’t be able to add a due date when you first create a task. Instead, you would need to go back and edit the task after it has been created to add the deadline. It’s a bit of an unusual workflow, yes. However, it’s a sign that the company is actively exploring how to bring this functionality to the app.

The current test version has a few limitations. For example, it only allows you to set a date, not a specific time. Also, the deadline only appears when you open the individual task, rather than being visible in the main list of all your tasks. The final version of the feature could have a more intuitive operation. That said, it’s important to remember that this is just an early test. There’s no guarantee that the final version will work this way—or even be released at all.

Still, the very fact that Google is testing this feature suggests that the company is listening to user feedback. Adding deadlines would be a crucial upgrade, helping Google Tasks transition from a simple checklist to a more robust and useful task manager for a wider range of users.

Google working on improving Tasks

This isn’t the only update Google has been working on for the app. The company has also been spotted testing support for attaching Google Drive files to tasks through Google Calendar. So, Google seems to be actively listening to user feedback.
