Pixel 10 Users Just Need to Slide

The Pixel 10 is the new flagship lineup on the street, and it brings some notable improvements. Besides the vanilla model, the series includes the Pixel 10 Pro, Pixel 10 Pro XL, and Pixel 10 Pro Fold. The phones also focus on improving the Display viewing experience rather than making any big hardware changes to the panels. We get new features like Adaptive Tone and an enhanced PWM Dimming rate. Another notable change is to the ‘Extra Dim’. On Pixel 10, Google is integrating the Extra Dim feature directly into the brightness slider. This makes it much easier to access.

Extra Dim is an accessibility feature that makes the screen even dimmer than its lowest hardware brightness setting. This alters the red, green, and blue pixel data before it’s rendered. The feature debuted in Android 12 back in 2021 and makes viewing the phone in completely dark environments slightly comfortable. It reduces the intensity of bright colors and makes the content appear dimmer.

The Extra Dim feature is usually present under the Accessibility menu in System Settings on most Android phones. You must enable or disable it manually at all times. To make it easier to access it, Google is now integrating Extra Dim directly into the brightness slider on the Pixel 10. This removes the need for manual intervention. The OS will automatically enable Extra DIM when you move the brightness slider to its extreme minimum and disable it when you raise the brightness again.

May roll out to older Pixel phones

After setting up the Pixel 10 series, many users are reportedly seeing a new dialog that reads, “Extra dim is now part of the brightness slider.” This appears when a user taps the Extra dim shortcut in the Quick Settings. It says, “You can now make the screen extra dim by lowering the brightness level even further. Since this feature is now part of the brightness slider, extra dim shortcuts are being removed.”

The Extra DIM feature’s integration into the brightness slider has been in the works for over a year now. It made an appearance on Pixel 9 in early previews of Android 16. But then, it never made it to the stable release. For now, the feature is available only on the Pixel 10 series, but there’s a chance it could come to older Pixel devices in the future.
