Google Messages Can Now Blur Nudity Before You Even See It

Google is now rolling out Sensitive Content Warnings for Google Messages on Android. This is a safety feature that can detect and blur images that contain nudity.

The Google Messages app on Android now has the Sensitive Content Warnings option

This is just an option, though, as Google is including a toggle in Google Messages. You can see that toggle below, and it’s powered by Android System SafetyCore. All processing/classification happens on-device, by the way. Google is quite clear that it “doesn’t send identifiable data or any of the classified content or results to Google servers.”

In order to access this toggle, which is off by default, you’ll need to tap on your profile icon in Google Messages first. From there, navigate to ‘Settings’, where you’ll find the ‘Protection & Safety’ submenu. There, tap the ‘Manage sensitive content warnings’ option, and you’ll get to the Sensitive content warnings toggle.

This option will blur nudity, and require extra steps when sending images containing nudity

If enabled, this option will blur photos that contain nudity. It will also require extra steps if you’re sending an image with nudity. You’ll be reminded of the risks and will be required to confirm in order to proceed.

It is worth noting that this feature can’t be turned off for supervised users. Parents can control it through the Family Link app. For unsupervised teens (13-17 years of age), this feature can be turned off in the Google Account settings.

If this feature sounds familiar, it’s because it was mentioned several times before. It was announced back in October last year, while the testing started in April via the beta channel. It’s now rolling out to the stable channel.

We’re not sure if this is a staged rollout or not, but we already have the feature on our devices. Chances are it’s the same for you as well.
