Threads Reaches Major Milestone in Active Users: 400 Million

Threads, the social media platform launched by Meta two years ago, has surpassed 400 million monthly active users. Instagram President Adam Mosseri made the announcement Tuesday. It also appears to be a significant step in the competition with X.

Threads now has over 400 million monthly users

Mosseri said, “As of a few weeks ago, there are more than 400 million people active on Threads every month. It’s been quite the ride over the last two years. This started as a zany idea to compete with Twitter, and has evolved into a meaningful platform that fosters the open exchange of perspectives. I’m grateful to all of you for making this place what it is today. There’s so much work to do from our side, more to come.”

This latest development shows that the social media platform gained 50 million new monthly users in the past quarter. Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced the platform’s user count as 350 million in the last week of April. Threads’ competitor, X, has over 600 million monthly active users, according to statements by former CEO Linda Yaccarino.

Threads is closing the gap in competition with X

Data on the competition between the two platforms reveals that Threads is approaching X’s share on mobile tech devices. In other words, this gap may narrow further in the next few months.

According to June 2025 data, Threads’ daily active users on its iOS and Android apps increased by 127.8 percent compared to the previous year, reaching 115.1 million. X’s daily active users decreased by 15.2 percent to 132 million during the same period.

Despite this mobile trend, X continues to dominate usage via web browsers. Market research data showed that X received an average of 145.8 million daily web visits globally in June. Threads‘ daily web visits remained at 6.9 million.
