In the world of smartwatches, you might think the most important feature is how long the battery lasts. However, Samsung is challenging that idea. The company suggests that some competitors are sacrificing too much in the name of a longer charge. In a recent press conference, a Samsung executive took a direct shot at Chinese smartwatches, positioning the Galaxy Watch as the superior choice for high-quality health tracking and performance.
Samsung boasts of its focus on quality compared to Chinese smartwatches
According to Choi Jong-min, a senior vice president in Samsung’s Mobile Experience division, the extended battery life of many Chinese smartwatches—often lasting seven to ten days on non-Wear OS models—comes with a major trade-off. He pointed out that these devices use low-power microcontrollers, which might save energy but result in poorer performance and less accurate sensor data. This approach helps these brands attract new buyers and gain market share. But Samsung says its focus is on something else entirely: a top-tier user experience.
Samsung’s philosophy, as explained by Choi, is to prioritize longevity and performance throughout a smartwatch’s life. This means a relentless focus on improving the accuracy of its health features. They point to the recently launched Galaxy Watch 8 series as an example of this strategy in action. These devices introduced several advanced metrics that aim to give users a deeper understanding of their health than ever before.
For instance, the new Antioxidant Index can measure the level of carotenoids in your skin. This metric can serve as an early indicator for certain health markers. The watch also now infers your vascular load. The latter quantifies the amount of stress your body is under while you sleep. This gives a more precise view of your sleep quality and its impact on your overall health. Galaxy Watch 8’s sophisticated features are powered by a new and improved 3-in-1 biosensor, a piece of technology that Samsung has been working on for years.
Galaxy Watch 9 and Watch 10 already in development
And Samsung isn’t stopping there. While the Galaxy Watch 8 just came out, the company is already deep into its research for the future. The same executive confirmed that teams are already reviewing and planning features for the next two generations of the device—the Galaxy Watch 9 and Watch 10.
Of course, the representative offered no clues about what these future wearables might offer. However, the confirmation reflects that the company has adopted a health-first philosophy as a key part of its business in the medium and long term.
