Qualcomm Says 6G Phones Could Arrive by 2028 — Here’s What to Expect

While most of us are tired of hearing about 5G, and many still think it causes health issues (spoiler alert: it does not), that doesn’t mean that 6G isn’t right around the corner.

Today at Qualcomm’s Snapdragon Summit, the company’s CEO, Cristiano Amon, mentioned in his “Ecosystem of You” session that they expect to have pre-commercial 6G devices available starting in 2028. That’s less than three years away.

While that might seem like it’s very soon after 5G, it actually isn’t. Since 5G pre-commercial devices started launching in 2016. With the first widely available 5G devices launching in 2019. The Samsung Galaxy S10 5G was the first 5G device and it launched on April 5, 2019.

Typically, new generations of mobile internet come out every 8 years or so. But with 6G, that would be 12 years after 5G launched. Which means that we’re finally starting to mature.

What’s so important about 6G?

Since 5G already provides some pretty incredible speeds and bandwidth, what could 6G provide? Well, it’s going to help us with the next evolution of mobile technology.

You see, smartphones aren’t going away, but the way we use them will change. As Qualcomm said back in 2021, “AI is the new UI”. And 6G is going to help with sensor data for these new devices like smart rings, smartwatches, smart glasses and other products. Which will be needed for AI, specifically Agentic AI. Which is something that Qualcomm did also show off this week at Snapdragon Summit. Below, there’s a quick demo of Qualcomm interacting with two Agents to plan a party.

So, are you ready for 6G? Because it’s coming sooner than you think. While 5G has a gigahertz spectrum, 6G is reportedly going to use a terahertz spectrum that is really going to make a huge difference for speeds and bandwidth.
