The voice assistant on your TV is about to get a lot smarter. Google has officially launched Gemini AI on Google TV, transforming the way you interact with your big screen. This isn’t just a simple update; it’s a move toward a more free-flowing, natural conversation with your home entertainment hub.
Gemini AI on Google TV is a big step up from the standard Google Assistant. The classic Google Assistant is functional and versatile, but you need to get used to specific voice commands to perform actions. On the other hand, Gemini offers a much more “conversational” experience, understanding requests in natural language. This makes finding a show or getting information feel more intuitive and less like a chore.
Google TV gets a major upgrade with Gemini AI
One of the most useful new features is how Gemini helps you find something to watch, especially when you’re watching with someone else. For example, if you and your partner have different tastes, you can ask something like, “Find me something to watch with my wife. I like dramas, but she likes lighthearted comedies.” Gemini can also help you quickly catch up on a new season of a favorite show. You can simply ask, “What happened in the last season of ‘Outlander’?” and get an instant summary. Forgot the name of a show you heard about? You can just describe it, and Gemini will give you a few options.

But Gemini’s capabilities go beyond entertainment. You can also use it for learning right from your couch. It can help you with school projects, answer homework questions, or even help you learn a new skill by pulling up helpful YouTube videos. Want to learn to play the guitar? Ask Gemini for a beginner’s guide. Need a quick recipe for a potluck? It can find one for you.
Rollout starting today, but not for everyone
The rollout for Gemini today begins on the new TCL QM9K series. For other Google TV users, including those with a Google TV Streamer or a Walmart onn 4K Pro, the wait won’t be much longer. Gemini will arrive on a broader range of devices, including certain 2025 Hisense and TCL models, later this year. To get the new features, your device will need to be running Android 14. Fortunately, even the “old” Chromecast with Google TV dongles already received Android 14.

There are currently over 300 million active Google TV and Android TV OS devices worldwide. This launch marks a big shift in how people will interact with their TVs. As Google notes, this is “just the start,” and more Gemini features are on the way.
