Sony Pushes Android 16 to Xperia 1 VII, Leaves Security in August

We finally have some good news for the Sony Xperia 1 VII users, as the Android 16 update is now rolling out to the device. This comes following some launch problems, which forced Sony to temporarily stop selling the device.

The device was originally announced back in May with Android 15. Well, the new version of Android is now rolling out, as it seems like some users have started to receive it. Reports have been surfacing on Reddit.

Android 16 is now rolling out to the Sony Xperia 1 VII

The firmware version in question is 71.1.A.2.68, and the update weighs 1.13GB. This update seems to be an EU version of Android 16, by the way, your numbers may differ a bit.

The screenshot that was shared by a user on Reddit does not include a changelog, unfortunately. What he did confirm is that the security update is still stuck on August 2025. This update does not bring the September update.

What about the visible changes? Well, users have only reported a different settings app. The rest of the UI seems to be looking the same as on Android 15, at least based on what was said on Reddit.

The Sony Xperia 1 VII is the most powerful smartphone the company has announced this year. It is Sony’s flagship, and it will stay that way until mid-2026, most likely. This phone resembles its predecessor quite a bit, design-wise.

The phone is very similar to its predecessor

It is a squarish phone, which comes without a display camera hole or notch. Sony kept the top and bottom bezels a bit thicker to avoid including a hole in the display. There are three cameras on the back, while the phone’s frame is flat.

The Snapdragon 8 Elite fuels this smartphone, while Sony included 12GB of LPDDR5X RAM. UFS 4.0 flash storage is also used, while a 6.5-inch fullHD+ display sits on the front, with a 120Hz refresh rate.

Furthermore, a 5,000mAh battery is also included, while 30W wired and 15W wireless charging are supported. The phone also has stereo speakers, and Sony promised 4 major Android OS updates for the device.
