165Hz Displays Are Coming to OnePlus — But Should You Even Care?

According to a new report, OnePlus is testing a display upgrade for its smartphone as we speak. OnePlus is allegedly testing panels with a 165Hz refresh rate.

OnePlus is testing 165Hz displays

Using such a display would be a first for OnePlus, as the company has been using 120Hz panels for a while now. What’s interesting, however, is that this report claims a mid-range phone will be first to get such a panel.

It is still not clear what phone will that be, but the flagship handset should follow suit. The screen in question is a 1.5K display. Considering that the OnePlus 15 is rumored to use a 1.5K display, it could end up offering a 165Hz resolution.

Should you be excited for this change? Well, no, not really. Why? 165Hz displays usually only kick in for gaming, and the vast majority of people won’t even notice the change.

We’re not all that excited, and there’s a good reason for that

To make things worse, the OnePlus 13 didn’t really take advantage of its 120Hz in most games, so… we’re not really all that excited for this change. What’ll surprise you even more is the fact that most people won’t even notice the difference betweeen 60Hz and 120Hz gaming, the same goes for 165Hz gaming, at least on phones.

OnePlus, almost certanily, will not allow for the display to run at 165Hz during regular use. That would be pointless, as you wouldn’t notice the difference, and your battery life would suffer greatly.

It remains to be seen what mid-range phone will end up debuting a 165Hz display. It is expected to arrive at some point this year (what remains of it), but before the OnePlus 15 gets announced. That is expected to happen in October.
