Honor Wants Your Next Foldable to Have a 200MP Camera

Typically speaking, we’ve seen phone makers use different cameras for different phones. We can’t speak to the exact reason why, but overall costs might be one reason. However, it seems that HONOR is planning to spare no expense for its future high-end smartphones. A report from tipster Digital Chat Station suggests that HONOR is planning to equip all its high-end phones, including its foldable phones, with 200MP cameras.

HONOR to use 200MP cameras, even on foldable phones

The post suggests that the use of 200MP cameras will be the new “standard” on HONOR phones in the future, which includes its regular flagships and foldable phones. In fact, there might be some evidence to suggest this report is accurate.

According to the rumors, the upcoming Honor Magic8 Ultra will feature a 200MP periscope telephoto camera. HONOR has reportedly placed a lot of orders for the sensors. The company is also planning to use the camera in the Magic V6, which is expected to launch in 2026, and is the successor to the recently launched HONOR Magic V5.

However, we have to question, is it really necessary?

Is 200MP excessive?

Now, a lot of phone makers tend to market having more megapixels as a good thing. They’re not entirely wrong. Higher resolution sensors can capture more detail. This is ideal if you plan to crop and don’t want to lose too many details in the process, or if you plan to print big photos or banners with your images.

However, more megapixels does not necessarily determine if a photo is a good photo. There are a lot of subtleties to taking a good photo. We’re talking about framing subjects correctly, having enough light, the rule of thirds, and so on. However, if we want to look at the more technical aspects, we’d much rather have a larger sensor.

Larger sensors, typically found in DSLR cameras, are one of the reasons why our phones still can’t completely match the quality of professional cameras. A larger sensor allows more light in, which allows for better dynamic range, better details in the highlights and shadows, and also a shallower depth of field. This results in greater background blur, perfect for portraits.

We’ve already seen companies like Xiaomi work with Sony to create 1-inch sensors for phones. It’s a shame that we aren’t seeing more of it. However, a 200MP sensor is still a good upgrade. It’s also an outstanding solution for periscope telephoto cameras. It remains to be seen how will the company utilize 200MP cameras across its smartphone lineup.
