YouTube Shorts are quite popular, attracting billions of views daily. They’re relatively easy to make for creators compared to long-form content. Shorts also allow viewers to consume important information quickly. To make things more seamless, Google is integrating its advanced AI video generator, Veo 3, into YouTube Shorts. The upgrade makes generating Shorts as easy as writing a simple text prompt.
YouTube Shorts gets Veo 3 integration
You can write simple text prompts inside the YouTube mobile app. The ‘fast’ version of the Veo 3 AI tool will make an eight-second video clip, including sound. Once you give a prompt like “a robot chef flipping pancakes on Mars” and choose a visual style (animated or cinematic look), Veo 3 will quickly produce the mini-video for you. However, it generates output with lower latency at 480p.
Though the YouTube video length and quality will be limited, creating a usable clip right from your phone with no actual footage is quite impressive.
The feature is now rolling out in select regions
You can generate videos with Veo 3 by tapping the ‘Create’ button, then the sparkle icon in the top right corner to create a video from a prompt. As said, you don’t have to upload real footage. This is free to use and doesn’t need a Gemini subscription, for now. Though the video will have sound relevant to the scene, there’s no dialogue. Reportedly, every video clip generated with Veo 3 in Shorts will have a label that says “AI-generated.”
This new integration expands on the ‘Dream Screen’ feature that allows users to generate an AI background for Shorts. The Veo 3 integration within YouTube Shorts is rolling out in the US, the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand. It plans to expand to more regions soon.
Additionally, the tool will also allow users to generate green-screen video backgrounds, which can be layered behind human performers. You can do this by recording yourself and replacing the background with a more dramatic scene. Again, all from your phone.
