Google Drive’s New In-Browser AI Video Editor Changes Everything

Google has been continuously improving most of its in-house platforms throughout the year, including Google Drive. The search titan has improved its cloud storage service a lot lately, mostly with Gemini AI-powered features. Recently, the firm gave the app the ability to analyze videos, AI-backed summaries of changes in shared files, and automatic PDF summaries using Gemini. Now, Google Drive has received another handy ability, which allows you to do in-browser video editing.

Google Vids powers the new feature

The latest feature in Google Drive allows in-browser video editing using the company’s in-house AI-powered video creation platform, Google Vids. When you are previewing a video saved in your Drive, you’ll now get an “Open” button in the top-right corner of the screen. Tapping the button automatically opens your video file in the Google Vids AI tool. Here, you can make many simple edits like trimming video clips, adding text or audio, and more.

Google Vids creates a new project file once you use the new Google Drive in-browser video editing option. After you finish editing the clip, you can export it in one of the non-editable formats, such as MP4.

There are some caveats with the new feature

As expected, there are some caveats with Google Drive’s in-browser video editing tool. Unfortunately, only paid users, including those with any of the Workspace business and enterprise plans, can access the feature. Those with Gemini Education or Gemini Education Premium add-ons can access this functionality, apart from Google AI Pro and Ultra subscribers.

Currently, the new tool only allows editing MP4, QuickTime, OGG, and WebM file formats. Furthermore, there’s a limit of individual video shorts of 35 minutes in length and a maximum of 4GB in size.

While the feature supports recent versions of Chrome and Firefox on all platforms, Edge users can only use it on a Windows machine. Google has gradually started rolling out this functionality, and it should reach all users in the next 15 days.
