Xiaomi 17 Pro Max Officially Confirmed to Feature Secondary Screen: Video

Xiaomi is expected to debut its next-gen smartphone later this month. According to the rumors, the upcoming Xiaomi 17 Pro and Pro Max models could feature a rear display. We’ve already seen the leaked images, and now the official teaser has confirmed it.

Xiaomi 17 Pro Max will feature rear display

In a series of images and a video shared on X by tipster Abhishek Yadav, these are official teaser images of the Xiaomi 17 Pro series which clearly depicts a rear display next to its cameras. From what we can tell, it looks like this secondary display could be used to display images, a clock, and more. We wouldn’t be surprised if users can even use this secondary display as another viewfinder for the cameras or to get notifications.

Interestingly enough, this is not Xiaomi’s first attempt at a rear display. The company attempted to create a phone with a similar concept with the Xiaomi Mi 11 Ultra. The Meizu Pro 7 also had something similar. However, there is a reason these designs haven’t really caught on.

Firstly, it’s too novel. Sure, there are some practical uses, but is it really necessary? Secondly, having a secondary display means more battery drain. If Xiaomi had gone with an e-ink display, maybe that would have worked. But a full color (potentially) OLED display? That could drain the phone’s battery faster than most of us would like. However, in this day and age of smartphones, companies need to come up with something unique to stand out. Whether or not this design will be well-received by the masses remains to be seen.

The scarily-similar sounding name

Now, some of you might be confused with the naming scheme. What happened to the Xiaomi 16 series? Why did Xiaomi jump from 16 to 17? The answer is simple: Apple. Xiaomi exec Lu Weibing pretty much confirmed this in a post on Weibo. According to the exec, the company wanted to align itself with the iPhone.

Seeing as how Apple launched the iPhone 17 series last week, Xiaomi wants to follow suit. Thankfully, apart from the name, the phones look completely different, so we doubt Xiaomi will find itself in a legal predicament. In any case, the company will officially launch its new phones on September 26 in China. We should all the official details then.
