Every year for the past few years, Samsung has released two foldable phones: the Galaxy Z Fold series and the Galaxy Z Flip series. However, in 2026, Samsung plans to change its lineup. Instead of two foldables, the company could launch three, which includes two Galaxy Z Fold models and one Galaxy Z Flip.
Two Galaxy Z Fold models coming in 2026
This report comes from a tipster, Ice Universe, on X, who suggests that Samsung could increase the number of foldables it launches next year. So, what’s the difference between the models? Well, it seems that Samsung could adopt a similar strategy as its Galaxy S series. According to the post, one of the new Fold models will be shorter vertically. However, when it is unfolded, it will be longer horizontally.
The report says Samsung wants to create a “widescreen” fold by splicing two 18:9 aspect ratio displays together. This will result in a display with an 18:18 aspect ratio, which is essentially a perfect square. For context, the Galaxy Z Fold 7 also has a near-perfect square aspect ratio, but we suppose this will make it even more square than before.
We’re not sure what the point is. When the idea of foldable phones was nothing but a rumor, most of us imagined it would be a phone that could transform into a tablet. However, the reality is much different. The majority of foldables still have a square-ish display when unfolded.
This makes it tricky when it comes to watching videos, which are typically designed for rectangular displays. However, this doesn’t mean the larger screen is bad. It’s still great for viewing content like emails, documents, and websites.
What about the tri-fold?
That being said, if Samsung plans to launch three foldables next year, what does that mean for its tri-fold? The company is planning to launch its first tri-fold this year. If the report claims that Samsung plans to launch three foldables in 2026, does that mean Samsung might skip an annual refresh of its tri-fold?
Also, if the rumors are true about the tri-fold’s limited global availability, does that mean Samsung isn’t planning to release a global version next year? This is just speculation. UniverseIce’s post on X could simply be talking about Samsung’s current foldable lineup. It is possible that the tri-fold could see a global launch next year, similar to the Galaxy Z Fold Special Edition, but we’ll have to wait and see.
