If you’ve ever wished to share your favorite music, podcast, or more with your loved ones without leaving the Spotify app, the new DMs feature is for you. Spotify announced the direct messaging feature today via a press release, noting the initial rollout will begin in “select markets” this week.
Spotify’s DMs feature lets you share audio content and text messages
The DMs feature on Spotify is accessible via the share icon when listening to a song, podcast, or audiobook in the Now Playing View. Next, you need to select a friend you want to send it to. It’s worth noting that you can share content and start messages with Spotify users who share a paid plan with you. You can still send DMs in Spotify with others if you’ve interacted with them via Blends, Jams, and Collaborative Playlists.
Spotify suggests that it aims to bring content recommendations under a single umbrella with the new DMs feature. If you’ve previously shared any audio content with other Spotify users, you’ll see all of them in the Message inbox. You can easily access it from under your profile picture in the top left corner of the Spotify app.
So, what else does the new DMs feature support? Spotify notes that in addition to sharing audio content, you can use the DMs feature for texting and emoji reactions. Speaking of security, the audio streaming giant notes that all your messages are protected by “industry-standard encryption.”
You can accept/reject messages, block users
Fortunately, Spotify’s new DMs feature lets you choose to accept or reject message requests and block other users. Despite the feature being new, Spotify is allowing users to opt out of the DMs feature entirely.
While the platform will keep scanning all the messages for “certain unlawful and harmful content,” you’ll still get the option to report any shared content or messages by just holding down on them.
For now, it’s unclear whether artists will have access to the feature, which could allow them to interact with fans. Moreover, the DMs feature will be available for free and premium users aged 16 years and older on mobile devices.
