Google Brings Material 3 Expressive to Pixel Recorder App

In keeping with the trend, Google has now extended the Material 3 Expressive redesign to the Pixel Recorder app. This brings to the app a new pill-shaped search field, prominent play and pause buttons with text, and the Material 3 Expressive bold colors. Android Authority shared that the redesign also extends to the settings part of the app. This part now features prominent bright-colored Material Expressive 3 themed toggles. The toggles come with a check mark that confirms an ON or OFF toggle.

The new features coming to the Pixel Recorder app via Material 3 Expressive

Material 3 Expressive is Google’s new way of referring to personalization on Android devices.  This infuses bold colors and playful themes all over the Android ecosystem. It sets it apart from other Android iterations before it. Since Google announced the Material 3 Expressive on May 13, it has continued to bring new features to Android, especially to Pixel devices.

What Google announced as coming to the Pixel Recorder app on Pixel devices is a revamp of that app. These, according to Android Authority and Ainvest.com, include a simplified interface and a new pill-shaped search field. Also, the buttons have been enlarged and now feature text alongside.

This is particularly helpful for accessibility. Users can now easily identify functions at a glance and make the app reachable on large-screen devices too. You can see a side-by-side comparison of the old Pixel Recorder app in the screenshot below shared by Android Authority.

Are these revamps gimmicky or superficial?

In another screenshot that highlights the reach of the overhaul, the design changes affect the toggle buttons in the app’s settings. The screenshot below shows the changes that were made. The toggle buttons now distinctly let you know when an ON toggle is actually ON, with bright, bold colors. No more second-guessing. While these internal changes might seem minimal, they help with accessibility and enhance user experience.

The Pixel Recorder app continues to be a highly useful app, and it is great to see these revamps. You can use the Pixel Recorder app to record voice notes, and it comes with on-device transcription and cloud backup functionality. Also, it can be accessed on the go via a website.

The app is available on the Play Store. However, it is currently available for Google Pixel devices only. We hope that other OEMs will roll out these features soon as the Material 3 Expressive gains more ground.
