Android 16 Will Finally Make Themed Icons Work for Every App

If you’ve ever tried to create a beautifully themed Android home screen, you know the frustration. The moment you switch on the “themed icons” feature, you’re left with a messy mix of icons that match your wallpaper and a bunch of others that stubbornly don’t. For years, this has been a source of annoyance for Android fans everywhere. However, the latest Android 16 QPR2 Beta 1 update confirms that Google is finally working on resolving the themed app icons issue.

Android 16 QPR2 Beta 1 integrates “forced” themed app icons

The first beta of Android 16 QPR2 brought many good news for Pixel phones -—like the latest Google Pixel 10 series. One of them is a much-needed solution that could make home screen customization a whole lot easier. Instead of relying on developers to create special monochrome icons, Android will now automatically generate a themed icon for every single app. This means that, for the first time, your home screen can have a completely uniform look, regardless of how many apps you have.

To make this happen, Google has changed up the home screen settings. The old, simple toggle for “themed icons” is missing. Now you’ll find a menu that gives you three options. The first two are “Default”—which will maintain the standard look—and “Minimal”—which will apply the new, consistent theming across all of your icons (spotted by Android Authority).

The third option, labeled “Create,” also appears in the new menu. While it doesn’t work yet—tapping it just brings up a message saying “App isn’t installed“—this button hints at what’s to come. This feature could be related to Google’s ongoing work with AI-generated icons. It could allow you to create custom icon styles and shapes.

The new, smarter theming is a major step forward for Android. It’s a clear sign that Google is listening to user feedback. We’ll have to wait for a future beta to see what the “Create” button can do, but for now, it’s good to know a much cleaner home screen experience is on the way. The stable version of Android 16 QPR2 will arrive in December.
