Google’s Gemini AI Just Got a Major Memory & Privacy Boost

Google has started rolling out a big update to its Gemini app. It brings a host of new features designed to make your AI assistant more personalized, powerful, and private. It seems Google wants its AI-powered flagship product to go beyond just answering prompts but to truly get to know you while also giving you full control over your data. With that in mind, Gemini got new capabilities like remembering past conversations, enabling temporary chats, and more customization options.

Here’s a look at what’s new in the latest update.

Gemini will become smarter by remembering your past chats

The biggest change is a new setting that allows Gemini to remember and “learn” about you from your past conversations. When this feature is on, the AI will remember key details and preferences you’ve shared. The goal is to provide a more natural, context-aware experience. It could make the chats much like talking to a friend who already knows your interests.

Gemini Personal context remembers Past Chats

For example, let’s say that you previously used Gemini to brainstorm ideas for your new podcast about retro video games. Well, a simple request for “new content ideas” might lead Gemini to suggest a video on the best ’90s RPGs or an interview with a classic game designer, all without you having to re-explain your interests. This feature is on by default to help you get more relevant responses. However, you can easily turn it off in the app’s settings.

Need a private chat? Try Temporary Chats

Google is also addressing privacy concerns head-on with a new feature called Temporary Chats. This is a perfect solution for those times you want a quick, one-off conversation with the AI without it becoming part of your permanent record.

Gemini Temporary Chat

Temporary chats won’t be saved in your chat history or used to personalize your future experience. So, gone are the days when every little request piles up in your account. Temporary chats will disappear from Gemini’s database after 72 hours. However, they will never become part of your chat history. This feature is a great way to explore sensitive topics or brainstorm ideas outside your usual interests without influencing your future interactions with Gemini. It also helps keep your chat list clean from quick queries.

More control over your data

Finally, the update brings more transparency and control over how your data is used. The “Gemini Apps Activity” setting is being renamed “Keep Activity.” The option now gives you a simple choice: when it’s on, a sample of your uploads may be used to improve Google’s services. If you prefer not to share, you can simply turn this setting off or use the new Temporary Chats feature.

While the rollout of these features begins today, you may not receive them immediately. Google typically ships its improvements in phases, and the company says it will continue to roll out the new options “over the coming weeks.”
